"I Survey First Ya." Then They Walk Straight Into the Kedai Sebelah
Every shop owner in Malaysia know this line. Customer already sit on the sofa, touch the fabric, ask about delivery. Then they smile and say it: "I survey first ya."
Your competitor always just one step away
Online, survey is free. Four competitor tabs open before your hero image finish loading. No need drive, no need park. Switching cost basically zero, so your product becomes one small thumbnail fighting on two things only: price, and how fast can deliver. All the effort you put into the finishing and the material cannot survive inside a thumbnail.
Retail shop is worse. In Mid Valley your competitor paid money to be beside you. At a roadshow the other booth is eight steps across the aisle. So when a walk-in customer say "I survey first", they are not going home. They are going to the kedai sebelah. Sometimes literally the one on your left.
What IKEA already figured out
IKEA launched one of the first proper consumer AR apps in 2017, because flat-pack depends on the customer believing one specific piece will fit one specific corner. Point phone at the living room, drop the sofa there, walk around it.
That answers the only two questions blocking the sale. Can fit or not, which is not "is it 210cm" but "will it look too big against that wall". And nice or not, against my floor and my lighting. Once both settled, not much left to survey already.
You are fighting for attention, not price
Here is the part people always miss. The moment the customer put your product inside their own room, they stop comparing. For that sixty seconds they are looking at their own living room with your thing standing in it, shifting it left a bit, calling the husband come see. Every second there is one second your competitor don't get, and all of it goes to appearance and fit, where you are strong, instead of price, where you probably cannot win.
How to use it
- Put it where they hesitate. QR code on the price tag, the shelf edge, the roadshow banner.
- Let your salesperson open it first. "Think about it" becomes "you try move it where you want".
- Make it survive the walk-out. If they keep the link, the survey happens with your product still standing in their living room.
- Scale must be exact. Agak-agak scale is worse than no AR. The whole thing runs on trust.
You confirm cannot beat a marketplace on price. But you can change what the customer is thinking about during the few minutes that decide the sale. Whoever hold attention longest usually win.
